Massage is a wonderful, versatile treatment that can be enjoyed by many types of people for a variety of reasons.
It isn’t essential to make special preparations before a massage, but they could help your treatment feel more enjoyable and more effective.
Here’s what we recommend:
We all know that our bodies are more than 70% water and good hydration is essential for health. Dehydration seems to lead to stiffer muscles which are less responsive to treatment. Manual therapy can also be surprisingly tiring, something compounded by being dehydrated.
Prevent these problems by sipping extra fluids before and after your treatment.
- Eat a few hours before your massage
After a massage you may feel tired and a little light headed. This will be much worse if your blood sugar levels are low or you are hungry, so we suggest a light meal a few hours before your appointment.
- Wear loose, light layers and comfortable underwear
For most types of massage you will need to undress down to your underwear. Changing time is included in your appointment so we recommend wearing loose layers which are easy to get on and off. This will save you time, meaning more treatment time!
This advice also applies to shoes. Trainers or slip on shoes are much quicker to remove than elaborately fastened styles.
We also advise you to wear comfortable underwear. You will get most benefit from your massage if you are able to relax, and that is quite tricky if your underwear is digging in to your skin. Please note that underpants must be worn during treatment.
- Bring details of your medical history and medication
In order to provide a safe and effective treatment your therapist needs to understand your medical history and general health.
Before you arrive try to remember any major illness, surgery and accidents including broken bones, sports injuries and car accidents. Bring the names of any medication too. Many people simply bring a copy of their prescription.
- Arrive in plenty of time
Arrive about 10 minutes before your appointment to allow time to fill in any consultation forms and to quietly relax in preparation for your massage.
We hope that helps and look forward to welcoming you to Ashlins very soon.
