Physiotherapy: Frequently Asked Questions

1. What should I expect during my first physiotherapy appointment?
Your initial consultation lasts approximately 45–60 minutes. Your therapist will discuss your medical history, perform a physical assessment of your movement and strength, and create a personalised treatment plan. We usually begin treatment during this first session.

2. What should I wear to my physiotherapy session? Please wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows you to move freely. If we are treating a lower limb issue, shorts are ideal; for neck or shoulder issues, a vest top is helpful so the physiotherapist can easily examine the area.

3. Do I need a GP referral to book a Physiotherapy session at Ashlins? No, you do not need a referral from your doctor to see our private physiotherapists. You can book directly with us. However, if you plan to claim through private health insurance, we recommend checking with your provider first as they may require a GP note.

4. How many sessions will I need? Every injury is unique. During your first assessment, your physiotherapist will give you an estimated timeline. Some acute issues resolve in 2–3 sessions, while chronic or post-surgical recovery may require a longer-term plan.

5. Is Physiotherapy painful? Our goal is to reduce your pain, not increase it. While some manual therapy techniques or exercises may feel “challenging” or slightly uncomfortable as we work on sore tissues, your therapist will always work within your tolerance levels and explain the process.
