Hypnotherapy is a long-established and evidence-based way of helping you develop new automatic responses as well as rehearse new ways of being; for instance to enhance performance.
Hypnotherapy can be applied in a wide range of cases ranging from:
preparation for surgery,
recovery from surgery or an injury,
improved physical performance,
improved work performance,
unlearning habits and phobias,
unlearning depression and anxiety,
and becoming less stressed.
Hypnosis itself can be described as a controlled waking dream state where the imagination is harnessed to create new associations within the mind.
Unlike what is suggested by stage hypnosis, the therapist does not take control of the client. In fact, you are always in control – you can’t be made to do something you don’t want to do and through hypnotherapy, you gain more control over your own behaviour, thoughts, feelings and physical health.
It includes visualisation and other mental exercises that can be accompanied with physical and mental relaxation. It is enjoyable, natural and safe.
The experience can vary: you might stay conscious of the room and feel nothing particular has happened or you might drift off elsewhere in your mind or both.
This is changework therapy. While talk therapy enables people to process and understand their emotions or behaviours, this is for when you are ready to change in a focused and specific way.
While hypnosis is an everyday phenomenon and we all use elements of hypnotherapy daily without realising we do, it’s not appropriate for everyone. If you have epilepsy, asthma or COPD that isn’t controlled by medication or psychosis, bipolar disorder or a dissociative disorder, you will need to consult your doctor before attending a session
