Hygge (pronounced ‘hYOOgah’) is a Danish word with no direct equivalent in English.  It describes a feeling of cosiness and security; the way you feel when enjoying a good meal with your favourite people.

Danish Hygge

One definition reads “hygge is the absence of anything annoying or emotionally overwhelming; taking pleasure from the presence of gentle, soothing things”.

I think hygge is something we can all benefit from, particularly in the darker winter months.

Here’s some inspiration for you.

Hygge is:

  • A flickering candle.
  • Warm woolly socks.
  • Hugs
  • Hot Chocolate
  • Tea and biscuits after a long walk.
  • Saturday afternoon in a cosy pub.
  • Listening to your favourite album.
  • Sunday roast
  • Stroking a dog or cat
  • Sharing a freshly baked cake with friends
  • Belly laughs
