Colonic Hydrotherapy is one of our most popular and fascinating treatments here at Ashlins.  Colonics are often misunderstood, so therapist Claire is here to answer your questions.

Is colonic hydrotherapy the same as colonic irrigation?

Yes it is, the two terms can be used interchangeably.  ‘Irrigation’ describes the treatment process itself, while the ‘therapy’ part means consideration of factors such as diet and lifestyle which will influence gut health.

What exactly does a colonic treatment involve?

Warm filtered water is gently rinsed in and out of the colon to release build up of impacted faecal matter, bacteria and gas and also to relax muscle spasm which may be causing dysfunction. I use specific massage techniques throughout the treatment and can also add herbs as an enema to address specific issues. I use a closed system which means there is no smell or mess and most people find the treatment very soothing.

 Who should have a colonic?

People of all ages and walks of life enjoy colonics as part of a healthy lifestyle. The treatment is suitable for most people as long as they are generally in good health, but if you have any medical conditions you should contact the clinic to check that treatment can go ahead.

When the colon becomes blocked up it loses its ability to absorb water and the balance of gut bacteria may become disrupted.  This can contribute to generalised toxicity of the body, and may play a role in a variety of health problems such as headache, foul body odour, abdominal pain, period pain and back ache.

What are the benefits of colonics?

Colonic hydrotherapy may help:

– Reduce bloating.

– Ease constipation.

– Ease abdominal pain and digestive discomfort.

– Improve function of the colon, thereby reducing toxicity in the body.

If you are suffering with abdominal pain we recommend you speak to your GP in the first instance.

Will it help me lose weight?

Weight loss does seem to be a happy side effect of the treatment for many people, although you will need to focus on diet and exercise to achieve the best results.

Colonics can often dramatically reduce bloating so that the abdomen looks far less bloated and feels more comfortable.

Is it safe?

Colonic treatments carried out by a properly trained therapist and using the correct equipment are very safe and serious side effects extremely rare. Beware of cut price treatments offered on discount sites and or ‘Do it Yourself’ set ups.
