Frequently Asked Questions:
What is acupuncture and does it hurt?
Acupuncture uses very fine needles which are inserted into specific points on the body to promote healing. It is generally a low pain procedure, most people describe it as mild or temporary.
What is a group pain clinic?
A group pain clinic is a setting where multiple individuals receive acupuncture in a shared space. An acupuncturist will visit each patient to discuss, insert and adjust the needles as needed.
What kind of pain can you treat?
Acupuncture is well known for pain relief effectiveness and is recommended in NICE (The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) as a treatment option. It can treat both acute and chronic pain. Although we recommended that pains that are presented with a complex health picture would be more suited to a one to one setting. If in doubt please give
us a call to discuss.
How long does a session last?
Approximately 30 minutes.
How many sessions do I need?
This varies from person to person, generally chronic pains require more treatment sessions than acute pains. Acupuncture can make a difference after one session but if it doesn’t seem to work straight away, give it 2-3 sessions and reassess.
What should I wear?
Please wear loose fitting clothes so your forearms, lower legs and shoulders are easily accessible.
Is it safe to receive acupuncture in a group setting?
Yes, it is. Acupuncturists follow strict hygiene and safety protocols. Each patient’s privacy and comfort is respected through positioning and single use, sanitised needles.
Side effects and contraindications
Acupuncture with a qualified therapist is generally considered safe, although occasionally it can cause minor bleeding or bruising at the site of insertions. Needling can also cause the muscles at the site to release tensions consequently your arms or legs might feel achy or heavy for a couple of
days.
If you have the following conditions, please disclose them to Uma beforehand so she can advise / adjust the treatment accordingly.
-
You have bleeding disorder or on blood thinning medications
-
You are pregnant
-
You have an active infection or skin infections at or near the site of needling.
-
You have uncontrolled hypertension, pacemakers or other electrical implants.
-
If you have compromised immune functions.
Please discuss your concerns with Uma and she will try to accommodate and make you feel as comfortable as possible!
