Running is a fantastic form of exercise but like any activity, it carries a risk of injury. Some injuries are simply bad luck but many can be avoided if you know what to do!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
MISTAKE 1:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Overtraining is a very common cause of injury. Doing too much, too soon may push your body to the point of injury or pain. This often seems to happen 4-6 weeks into a new training regime.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
FIX :⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Avoid doing the same exercise on consecutive days. Either switch between different running styles (mix longer, slower runs with shorter, faster training), alternate between running and another form of exercise, or simply take a rest day.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Schedule at least 2 rest days a week. Your body needs regular time to rest and recover!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Increase distance gradually. Don’t try to fit marathon training into 6 weeks – give yourself plenty of time to build up your fitness. Consider joining a running club such as Eton Manor or Orion Harriers, hiring a running coach or simply using a free training plan from a reputable site like Runnersworld.⠀⠀
MISTAKE 2 :⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Running in uncomfortable shoes. If your shoes are poorly fitting, old or an unsuitable style they will not give you the best performance and could contribute to injury.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
FIX :⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When your running shoes start to feel uncomfortable it’s usually a sign to replace them. The best indicator of well-fitting running shoes is comfort! Some shops do also offer a free fitting service.
MISTAKE 3 :⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Uneven or slippery running surface. Slip and trip hazards such as ice or wet leaves are obviously riskier choice of running surfaces. Uneven surfaces can present an enjoyable challenge (hello trail running in Epping forest) but it maybe too challenging and fatigue your muscles to the point of injury.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
FIX :⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Choose your routes carefully, and on very wet or icy days consider using a treadmill or doing a different type of exercise.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
