Acupuncture is a form of treatment
developed by the Chinese over thousands of years. It is based on
the idea that we, like everything else in the universe, have lines
of energy running through us which help all our functions to work
properly. In order for us to be healthy physically, mentally and
spiritually, these energy pathways, or meridians, must be able to
flow smoothly.
Along these meridians are certain places where the
energy is more accessible to manipulation; these are the acupuncture
points. Acupuncture practitioners insert very fine needles into
the skin at these points to help the energy to move properly and
clear any blockages that may be causing symptoms of ill-health.
Body, mind and spirit
Acupuncture treats the energy of the whole body, mind and spirit
and can help with problems on any or all of these levels. Acupuncturists
look at their patients as whole people rather than a set of symptoms
of ill-health and aim to build on your strengths and boost your
body’s defence mechanisms.
Your first treatment
Your acupuncturist will ask questions about your lifestyle, diet,
medical history etc and you will be able to discuss what you hope
to get from your treatment. There is also a physical examination
where your practitioner will look at your physical structure and
check for sensitive areas. During the treatment you may feel something
very slight as the needle pierces the skin and then a dull aching
sensation when it hits the point. Most patients find the sensation
quite acceptable.
